Disadvantages of Remote Work

While some employers are embracing remote work and offering their staff options to work from home—or even to work entirely remotely, with no physical location—there are others who believe that having employees in the office is a key to success.

Many companies have benefited from introducing remote work to their organizations, but there are disadvantages that can come with this option as well. Some of these challenges can be extremely impactful to a business in a negative way. Below we explore some of the struggles that employees and employers may face when it comes to remote work.

Isolation

It’s easy for employees to feel like they’re part of a company’s bigger picture when they’re in the office and brainstorming with coworkers every day. Remote work can make it more difficult for employees to feel connected to and involved with daily company happenings, which can ultimately lower morale.

Decreased Employee Visibility

Employees may hesitate to accept a remote position due to decreased visibility within the organization. They may feel that a lack of face time with their manager or other company leaders will make it more difficult for them to be awarded promotions or other growth opportunities.

Decreased Work/Life Balance

It may seem like working at home would make it easier for employees to have a work/life balance, but some argue that not having a physical distinction between where an employee works and where they spend their free time can actually make it more difficult for them to unplug, stop focusing on work, and enjoy time away from their jobs.

Lack of Relationships among Coworkers

Working together in an office provides employees with the opportunity to bond over shared experiences and build camaraderie with each other. Working remotely makes it more difficult to establish this relationship among coworkers, even when a company chooses to utilize teleconferencing, online chat systems, and other communication tools.

Increased Distractions

While employees undoubtedly experience day-to-day distractions in an office, it’s possible that they face even more distractions at home: children, spouses, pets, the latest Netflix craze, etc. Everyone’s in-home workspace is different, as is their ability to shutout distractions. But if an employee consistently shows a lack of focus or dedication, they may not be a good fit for remote work.

Consider both the advantages and disadvantages of remote work options before deciding whether or not they could benefit your organization and its employees.

Advantages of Remote Work

More and more companies across the nation are offering their employees the opportunity to work from home. Technological developments, like cloud-based systems and nearly ubiquitous wireless internet access, make remote work easier than ever. There are some who remain skeptical about the effectiveness of remote work, but there are advantages to working from home that can benefit both employees and companies.

Reduced Cost

Employing remote workers can decrease the cost of a brick-and-mortar office. In some cases, this cost can be totally eliminated. A remote workforce can also reduce the amount of company money spent on things like office snacks or supplies. The money saved can be invested back into employees’ salaries and the company as a whole.

Increased Productivity

Studies have shown that employees who work from home are more effective than those who work in a traditional office setting. It’s possible that this can be attributed to a quieter workspace, more control over time management, and a commitment to self-discipline by remote employees.

Decreased Commute

Eliminating an employee’s commute is likely to decrease their stress and boost their morale. Not only that, but employers can count on their employees to have a fixed start time – no more delays due to traffic jams, public transportation issues, or inclement weather.

Increased Exposure to Additional Markets

Hiring employees from a variety of cities, states, or even countries is one way to get increased insight into markets or demographics that an organization may not otherwise be familiar with. More diversity will bring a wider number of perspectives and ideas to the table.

Larger Hiring Pool

Hiring remotely eliminates many geographic barriers on a company’s ability to find talented employees, because the commute no longer has to be considered. And while salary and other benefits still play a role in attracting in-demand employees, remote work can offer an advantage when potential hires are comparing employers.

Determining whether or not remote employment opportunities are appropriate for your organization can be tough, and it requires a measured analysis of both the advantages and disadvantages. Check back with us next week, when we explore some of the challenges that can come along with remote work.

Remote Work

Remote work is gaining popularity as internet and enhanced technology services make it possible to do many day-to-day tasks from anywhere in the world, particularly office jobs. You can improve productivity by avoiding distracting conversations with colleagues, save money on transportation, reduce emissions from the lack of transportation involved, prevent working parents from needing to find child care, and help those with mobility impairments stay in the workforce. With the advent of remote work, many platforms allow you to find jobs that are specifically hiring remote employees.

FlexJobs

FlexJobs offers flexible jobs, including full-time, part-time, and freelance options—all listings are pre-screened and designed for remote work. The screening system prevents you from wasting time, since we all know a job search can go on longer than we'd like. FlexJobs has been around for more than 10 years and it offers many additional resources, such as skill tests and checklists.

Remote OK

Remote OK is another remote-work platform that, in order to reduce scams, requires companies to pay for listings. When searching for a job, you can browse by category, such as software development, marketing, design, non-tech, and on-line teaching. There are also filters to help narrow down your search.

UpWork

UpWork is a big name in the world of remote jobs and freelancing—offering positions for recurring projects, short-term tasks, and full-time jobs. There are dozens of job categories to choose from, divided into major headings, like web, mobile, and software development; IT and networking; data science and analytics; engineering and architecture; design and creative; writing; translation; legal; admin support; customer service; sales and marketing; and accounting and consulting. UpWork has it all.

Virtual Vocations

Virtual Vocations only lists telecommute jobs, all of which are screened by a real person for validity. There are more than 40 job categories to explore on this platform, with professional job leads and a range of additional downloads and resources.

We Work Remotely

We Work Remotely prides itself on being the largest web community for remote work job listings. Since there's a fee for listing jobs, you can count on them to be real, and the website claims to weed out scams. This website focuses on job listings in the fields of marketing, design, devops and sysadmin, programming, customer support, and business/executives and management, but it also includes other listings.

Tips for Remote Workers

Those considering remote work will get the benefit of working where they want, and can improve their experience with a few simple steps. For example, consider using a coworking space for your daily work or on occasion. All major cities now have several coworking space options. Coworking spaces typically have a range of workspaces, coffee, fast internet, and snacks waiting to improve your productivity.

If you are concerned about staying on task while working remotely, you should consider using task management or time management software. Some of the most popular options include:

  • Centrallo
  • Easynote.io
  • Pintask
  • Trello
  • Asana

To ensure effective remote work, don’t forget to give yourself assigned hours to work so you have time for a personal life and to remove distractions. If you cannot remove those distractions yourself, consider using a coworking space instead of working at home.

REMOTE WORK - WORK FROM HOME

What is remote work?

Remote work (also called telework) describes any type of work that doesn’t have to be performed in a traditional company office. Remote workers can do their jobs anywhere in the world—including their home, a co-working space, etc.—where they have access to high-speed internet

Based on our experience, there are basically three types of remote workers:

  1. Regular full-time or part-time employees who work remotely because the company allows, encourages, or requires it
  2. Contractors who have agreed to work for a company for a specified period of time
  3. Freelancers who take individual assignments

Although freelancers and contractors are more common in the remote work world, the list of partly- or fully-virtual companies is growing (especially in tech). In any case, the following techniques can help you find remote work no matter which category you fall into.
